Emine Şenyaşar reacts to police barrier

Police prevented the Şenyaşar family from holding their sit-in protest in front of the Urfa Courthouse. Reacting to the police barrier, Emine Şenyaşar attempted to burn herself.

Riha - The sit-in protest held in front of the Urfa Courthouse by Emine Şenyaşar, whose husband and two sons were murdered in the attack carried out by the relatives and bodyguards of AKP Urfa MP İbrahim Halil Yıldız in the Suruç district of Urfa province on June 14, 2018, and her son Ferit Şenyaşar has entered its 578th day.

In the morning, Emine Şenyaşar and her son Ferit Şenyaşar came in front of the courthouse to hold their sit-in protest. Yesterday, police removed the banner reading, “Justice for the Şenyaşar family, justice for everyone,” hung by the family on a concrete block. Today police did not allow the family members to hold their protest by blockading the area with iron barriers. Then, Ferit Şenyaşar wanted to hang the banner on the barriers; however, police prevented him. When Ferit Şenyaşar reacted to the police blockade, he was threatened with detention. Lawyers of the Urfa Bar prevented police from detaining Ferit Şenyaşar. 

She wanted to burn herself

Many riot police came in front of the courthouse. Riot police blockaded the area with shields and prevented the journalists from taking photos. Ferit Şenyaşar, who was injured in the hand during the police intervention.

Emine Şenyaşar, who saw how police brutally attacked her son and prevented them from holding their protest, wanted to burn herself while lamenting in Kurdish on the pavement. The people around her noticed Emine Şenyaşar would burn herself when she set a paper on fire in order to burn her clothes and extinguished the paper and took the lighter from her.

Despite the police barrier, the mother and her son held their sit-in protest.

“Where did you lose your conscience?”

“The party, whose name includes justice, who killed this mother’s husband and two sons at the hospital? Why is one of her sons kept in prison? For 578 days, the mother has been looking for a person to answer these questions. I ASK you, where did you lose your conscience?” the Şenyaşar family posted on their social media account today.
