Women of Makhmour demand physical freedom of Abdullah Öcalan

“What the Turkish state says contradicts what it does,” said the women of Makhmour joining the vigil that started two years ago to demand the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Makhmour-  The vigil that started in the Martyr Rustem Cudi Camp (Makhmour refugee camp) on July 22, 2023, to demand the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, imprisoned in the prison island of Imrali for 26 years, continues.

‘Leader Apo is the leader of all humanity’

The ideology and thoughts of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan have spread all over the world, said Qûmrî Tunç, who has joined the vigil. “Although an aggravated isolation has been imposed on leader Apo (Abdullah Öcalan) in Imrali for 26  years, his ideology and thoughts have spread all over the world. Various protests have been held in four parts of Kurdistan and different countries to demand the physical freedom of leader Apo. The reason why the Turkish state attacks the Kurdish people is that leader Apo is the leader of all humanity. The Turkish state says it wants peace; however, what it says contradicts what it does.”

Qûmrî Tunç has joined the vigil for more than a year. “Our vigil has continued for more than two years. We will do our part and continue our struggle until leader Apo is released.”

‘Leader Apo must be released now’

Zemê Denîz, another woman joining the vigil, also demands the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. “Leader Apo has been imprisoned for 26 years and several meetings have been held with him until now; however, this is insufficient. Leader Apo must be released now so that we will have a free life together. The Turkish state paves the way for the meetings in Imrali while carrying out its attacks on the Kurdish people. We reject this and struggle more. As the people of the camp, we are ready to do everything for leader Apo and we will struggle until his physical freedom is achieved.”

‘A peace process is only possible with freedom’

“We have been holding a vigil in the camp for more than two years to demand the physical freedom of leader Apo,” said Mirarî Nêrwehî. “The residents of the camp visit those who have joined the vigil. Our activities will continue until the physical freedom of leader Apo is achieved. What the Turkish state says contradicts what it does. A peace process is only possible with the freedom of leader Apo.”
