Siirt- Sofya Alağaş, Co-mayor of Siirt, was sentenced to six years and three months in prison on charges of “membership in an illegal organization” by the Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court on Tuesday.

Sofya Alağaş, the elected Co-mayor of Siirt from the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), has been removed from office, replaced with a state-appointed trustee, the Turkish Ministry of Interior announced following the court decision.
