Pakhshan Azizi granted ‘Honorary citizenship’ of Florence

The Florence City Council, Italy, has granted “Honorary Citizenship” to Pakhshan Azizi, humanitarian worker and civil society activist sentenced to death in Iran, the Free Pakhshan Azizi Campaign group announced on Tuesday.

“The Florence City Council in Italy has unanimously approved the proposal to grant Pakhshan Azizi honorary citizenship,” the campaign group said in a post on the social media platform X. “This decision is a testament to her relentless efforts in defending the rights of displaced women and children in the Middle East and a strong denunciation of the unjust death sentence imposed on her in Iran. Pakhshan, who has dedicated years to peace and human rights advocacy, has become a symbol of resilience and courage. With this recognition, Florence reaffirms its solidarity with her and all those who fight for human rights worldwide.”

On August 4, 2023, Pakhshan Azizi was arrested in Tehran by Iranian Intelligence Services. On July 23, 2024, she was sentenced to death by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on the charges of “armed rebellion against the state” after being held in solitary confinement in Ward 209 of Evin Prison for five months. On January 8, 2025, Branch 39 of the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence handed down to her.
