News Center- Shaghaf Al Omar, a reporter of NuJINHA based in Aleppo, and her sources have been threatened by unknown persons through text messages and social media platforms. The women, who told their stories to our reporter, were attacked, even one of them was kicked out of her home.
‘Writing is the only source of hope’
“Writing has become a crime,” said our reporter Shaghaf Al Omar. “Women’s rights defenders always receive threats.” Shaghaf Al Omar thinks that writing is the only source of hope in a world, where women are oppressed.
“I never thought that my pen would become a weapon threatening my life, or that reporting on women would make me a target for those who aim to intimidate women. For years, I have dedicated myself to exposing rights violations against women in conflict zones and reporting on women victims of oppression and marginalization. I did not know that my reports would be used as a tool to threaten and intimidate women, who dared to break their silence and speak out.”
‘Threats target everyone demanding changes’
Shaghaf Al Omar is determined to report on women’s issues in the city. “Some may wonder why we keep doing journalism despite facing death threats. We keep doing journalism because silence is not an option. Women need journalists who make their voices heard. The aim of the threats is to intimidate women journalists and activists. Threats target not only women journalists and activists but also everyone demanding changes.”
