Mariam Abu Daqqa: Lens of Gaza, voice of truth

Mariam Abu Daqqa was one of Gaza’s most prominent media voices. She was killed on August 25 this year in an Israeli strike on the Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, alongside four other journalists.

News Center- Her journalistic journey began in 2020 as a freelance photographer. She quickly stood out for her rare courage in covering events on the ground despite constant danger. Known for her deep passion for conveying the truth and her profound sense of humanity, she documented the daily suffering of civilians—especially women and children—under bombardment and blockade.

On the morning of her death, she made a final phone call to a colleague, urging him to “remain the people’s voice.” Only hours later, her long-repeated words came true: “One day the camera will fall from my hands in this war.”

Over five years, Abu Daqqa built a career marked by both creativity and sacrifice. She became known as “the lens of Gaza,” unafraid to move closer to the truth even in the most perilous moments.

Mariam Abu Daqqa was not only a journalist, but also a human being who carried her camera as a tool of resistance—facing death while striving to show the world her people’s suffering.
