Kazım Altınmakas sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for killing his wife
A court has sentenced Kazım Altınmakas to aggravated life imprisonment for “Deliberately killing,” his wife Fatma Altınmakas in Muş province.
Ağrı - Kazım Altınmakas, who killed his wife Fatma Altınmakas in the Malazgirt district of Muş province on July 14, 2020, has been sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for “Deliberately killing,” his wife. The final hearing of the murder case was held yesterday by the Patnos High Criminal Court. The hearing was followed by many women’s organizations, bar associations and political parties such as the Free Women’s Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera Jinên Azad-TJA), Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Women’s Council, Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Van Bar Association’s Women’s Rights Commission, Siirt Bar Association, Batman Bar Association, Ağrı Bar Association, Hakkari Bar Association, STAR Women’ s Association and Patnos Teşi Women's Counseling Center. Mir Bedirhan Ayaz, lawyer of Fatma Altınmakas’ family and the perpetrator's lawyer were also present at the hearing. Perpetrator Kazım Altınmakas attended the hearing through Audio-Visual Information System (SEGBİS) from prison.
During the hearing, which started after the identification, the court committee rejected the request of the Women’s Rights Center of the Batman Bar Association and Ağrı Bar Association to attend the hearing, arguing that they were “not directly affected by the crime”. Four months ago, the court decided to appoint a trustee (legal guardian) to Fatma’s child, who is under 18. The trustee also attended the hearing through SEGBİS. Speaking on behalf of the child, the trustee said he is the uncle of the perpetrator Kazım Altınmakas. Stating that he had a phone call with the child 15 days ago, the trustee said the child did not want to attend the hearing and that the child did not file a complaint against the perpetrator.
The prospector rejected the request for investigation
Muş Bar Association and lawyer Ruken Güven demanded that an investigation be launched into phone records and other evidence regarding the murder of Fatma Altınmakas; however, the prospector rejected their request.
Request from the perpetrator's lawyer
The perpetrator’s lawyer claimed that the statement of the child would reveal the truth and requested the child to be listened to again. The child previously attended a hearing and could not speak. The court rejected his request.
“Fatma rose up against the dirty mentality”
Fatma Altınmakas was raped by Kazım Altınmakas’s brother Sinan Altınmakas. And she was killed by Kazım Altınmakas after he learned the rape. Speaking at the hearing, lawyer Mir Bedirhan Ayaz said, “We have repeatedly stated many times that the indictment must be prepared again because this murder is an ‘honor crime’. Fatma was killed by Kazım Altınmakas after the release of Sinan Altınmakas. At that time, Kazım Altınmakas said, ‘I am thinking of killing her’. The state could not protect Fatma. But we could have protected her with our own means. The killing of Fatma is a social murder. This murder is a murder planned by the family. This is not an ordinary murder. Fatma was killed because she rose up against the dirty mentality.”
The lawyer demanded Kazım Altınmakas be sentenced for “Deliberately killing” Fatma Altınmakas.
