‘The appointment of the killer of Hevrin Khalaf is a crime’

Hasakah- Syria’s interim government appointed Ahmad al-Hayes (nom de guerre: Abu Hatim Shaqra), the man responsible for the killing of Kurdish politician Hevrin Khalaf, as commander of Division 86 operating across Deir ez-Zor, Hasakah, and Raqqa on Monday.

Women living in Hasakah, a city of North and East Syria, condemned the appointment of Abu Hatim Shaqra, emphasizing that the appointment was against the will and struggle of women.

“The appointment of a man, who was responsible for the killing of Hevrin Khalaf, poses a threat to the future of the Syrian people,” said Nûra Omer, a resident of Hasakah.

“Martyr Hevrin Khalaf is the symbol of peace, coexistence and solidarity for all Syrian women. A Kurdish woman and politician was brutally killed by Abu Hatim Shaqra. He was previously affiliated with the occupying Turkish state but today he is a member of HTS (Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham). The interim government appointed him as a commander, instead of holding him accountable. As the women of North and East Syria, we condemn his appointment. This person does not represent the Syrian people and he must be held accountable.”

‘HTS is the enemy of women’

Emina Hesen, another woman living in Hasakah, also condemned the appointment of Abu Hatim Shaqra.

“Following the fall of the Assad regime, the Syrian people expected a free and democratic Syria would be built,” Emina Hesen told NuJINHA. “However, they were disappointed by the formation of the government led by HTS. Since then, the Syrian people have been subjected to massacres and violence. The existence of terrorists in the interim government poses a threat to Syria’s future. I still do not understand how a man, who killed a woman, was appointed as a commander. HTS protects him, it is the enemy of women. We strongly condemn his appointment and we will struggle against his appointment.”

Ayat Abdullah, an Arab woman of Hasakah, also condemned the appointment of Abu Hatim Shaqra as the commander of Division 86. “The appointment of a man, who was responsible for the killing of Hevrin Khalaf, is unacceptable. This decision will lead to bloodshed in Syria.”
