Journalist Beritan Canözer sentenced to more than one year in prison
Journalist Beritan Canözer has been sentenced to one year and three months in prison on charges of “propagandizing for an illegal organization”.

News Center- The first hearing of the retrial against journalist Beritan Canözer over her social media posts about the curfews declared in the Sur district of Amed (Diyarbakır) in 2015, when she was a reporter of JINHA, an all-women news agency closed down by an emergency decree in November 2016, was held at the Diyarbakır 4th High Criminal Court on Tuesday.
In 2015, Beritan Canözer was arrested on terror charges for being “too excited” while covering a protest in Amed. “Her journalistic activities are considered a crime. An investigation was launched against her and she was detained for doing journalism,” Muharrem Erbey, lawyer of Beritan Canözer, said during the hearing. “Journalists, who criticize the government and report covering protests, are seen as criminals. Journalism is considered a crime. We demand her acquittal.”
The court sentenced Beritan Canözer to one year and three months in prison on charges of “propagandizing for an illegal organization”.
