Hasakah- Kongra Star Economy Committee has been making great efforts in Til Temir (Tell Tamer), a town in the Jazira Canton of North and East Syria, to provide employment to women and strengthen the local economy. It has started three bakery cooperatives and nine agricultural cooperatives and more than 35 women are employees of these cooperatives. Kongra Star Economy Committee has 5,326 acres of land, including 900 acres of agricultural land.

 NuJINHA spoke to Zehra Mihemed, an administrator of the committee, about the cooperatives and challenges faced by them.

Women and families participate in production

“The lands of the Economy Committee are located in different areas. Women and families participate in production. They grow wheat and corn. Our aim is to provide employment to women. According to our system, one family is responsible for 100 acres of land.”

 ‘We expect to harvest more crops this year than the previous year’

The region suffers from economic crisis, siege and ongoing attacks, Zehra Mihemed emphasized and said:

“Despite all these challenges, women do their best to develop projects. The women living in areas under intense attacks respond to the enemy by developing projects. We dug three water wells to irrigate 900 acres of agricultural land. We suffer from a deepening economic crisis. The Turkish state often targets civilian infrastructure, including our oil and natural gas wells. We also have projects to support the use of solar energy. We aim to promote women’s economic empowerment. Our agricultural project continues. We expect to harvest more crops this year than the previous year.”
