‘Syria’s new interim government has yet to take action for displaced people’
“It’s time for the displaced people to return to their homes,” said Zehra Semo, Co-chair of the Social Affairs Committee in the Jazira region, criticizing Syria’s new interim government for not taking action for displaced people.

RONÎDA HACÎ
Hasakah- The attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions on Afrin, Serêkanîyê (Ras al-Ayn), Girê Spî (Tell Abyad) and Shahba have displaced thousands. There are six internally displaced person (IDP) camps in the Jazira Canton of North and East Syria; 2,643 displaced people have taken shelter in the Serêkanîyê camp, 16,184 in the Washokani camp, 5,726 in the Newroz camp, 13,274 in the Arisha camp and 818 displaced families in the Roj camp. The recent Turkish attacks on Shahba and Til Rifat forced the displaced people of Afrin to displace for the second time. The displaced people of Afrin were settled in safe areas of North and East Syria.
“It’s time for the displaced people to return to their homes,” said Zehra Semo, Co-chair of the Social Affairs Committee in the Jazira region, criticizing Syria’s new interim government for not taking action for displaced people.
‘The displaced people hope to return to their homes’
Since the fall of the Assad regime, the displaced people have hoped to return to their homes, Zehra Semo emphasized. “Following the fall of the Assad regime, the Syrian people hoped to have a free life. Unfortunately, the war has not ended since Syria’s new interim government was formed. Since the beginning of the civil war, the people of Syria have suffered the forced displacement the most. Women and children have suffered from the displacement.”

Clashes, displacement and inhuman attacks continue in Syria, Zehra Semo stressed, adding:
“A ceasefire should have been declared to have a peaceful environment in Syria; however, the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions have intensified their attacks on North and East Syria since December 2024. The interim government is responsible for these attacks and human rights violations in Syria. All displaced people want to return to their homes. Six camps were built for the displaced people in the Jazira Canton. However, Syria’s new interim government has yet to take action for displaced people.”
‘The interim government remains silent against the attacks’
Zehra Semo pointed to the attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions on the Tishreen Dam and the resistance of the civilians against them. “Since December 2024, the Turkish state and its armed factions have been attacking the dam. The interim government remains silent against the attacks. The civilian vigil on the Tishreen Dam shows how people love their land and country. No one can break their strong will. The people demand their rights and they will never stop until they take their rights.”
Zehra Semo also called on human rights organizations to put pressure on Syria’s interim government to pave the way for the displaced people to return to their homes. “Women must play a leading role and all ethnic and religious groups must be recognized in the new Syria. Immediate action must be taken to end the suffering of the displaced people.”
