Koya — On December 11 each year, the world marks International Mountain Day, designated by the United Nations to highlight the exceptional value of mountain ecosystems and their vital role in human life. This day aims to raise awareness about the challenges facing mountains—such as climate change and environmental degradation—while calling for the protection and sustainable management of their natural resources for future generations.

On Thursday, December 11, the city of Koya in the Kurdistan Region witnessed a special event organized by a number of organizations and mountaineering groups. Participants climbed Mount Heibat Sultan in celebration of International Mountain Day, with a notably strong turnout of women. Their presence underscored the importance of women’s participation in mountaineering as a way to enjoy the natural beauty of the Kurdistan Region and to strengthen their visibility in this field.

Mountaineering is considered an important sport, especially for women, as it contributes to mental well-being and offers a deep opportunity to connect with nature.

Speaking about the occasion, physical education teacher Nikar Hamad expressed her joy, saying:
“I congratulate all mountain-climbing enthusiasts, especially the climbers of Koya, on this special day. I am happy to join the climbing teams in celebrating Mountain Day on Mount Heibat Sultan. Since 2014, we have been practicing this sport, and in 2018 we officially established a group under the name Oscar Organization. Mountaineering is highly meaningful—particularly for women—because of the psychological and aesthetic benefits it offers. It enhances self-confidence and opens new horizons for reflection and beauty.”

For her part, Nazifa Aziz, an elderly woman, affirmed her continued commitment to mountain climbing, noting that age is no obstacle to her passion for such activities. She expressed her happiness in joining the group, which she considers a successful and rewarding experience that gives her a sense of achievement and belonging.

Meanwhile, Samira Yasin, another participant, extended her congratulations to climbers inside and outside the region, especially the teams in Koya, on the occasion of International Mountain Day, emphasizing that the climate of the Kurdistan Region gives the journey a unique character.
