On the International Day for Protection of Children… organizing activities to support children with cancer

On the International Day for Protection of Children, the Kurdish Health Organization and Hiwa Hospital in Sulaymaniyah organized psychological activities and gift distribution to bring joy to children with cancer.

Sulaymaniyah – On June 1 of each year, the International Day for Protection of Children is celebrated. In this context, humanitarian and health organizations emphasize the importance of psychological support for children suffering from chronic diseases. Hiwa Hospital, a specialized cancer treatment center in Sulaymaniyah, is one of the most important centers that pays special attention to the psychological condition of patients, especially children. According to medical statistics, improvement in a patient's psychological condition significantly contributes to increasing the effectiveness of treatments.

In this context, Khoshi Shwan, director of the Kurdish Health Organization, said: "On the occasion of the International Day for Protection of Children, we wanted to celebrate this occasion with the children of Hiwa Hospital. These children need different psychological support; just offering a simple gift or putting a smile on their faces can turn into strength and hope for their future. A group of young people, dressed as cartoon characters, participated to make them happy. Various gifts were distributed to them, and a special lunch was prepared for them under the patronage of several supporting organizations."

She referred to her personal experience, saying: "I was previously diagnosed with cancer, and I lived through that pain and worry. I saw everything patients go through. For these children, a kind word, a touch of support, or even a simple breath of hope can breathe life back into their souls."

Tafka Salar, the mother of a child with cancer, said: "The psychological state of these children is very different from others. Just as medicine is important, psychological support is also important. Therefore, such activities must continue to keep sadness and pain away from them." She added that Hiwa Hospital continues to support children with cancer, celebrates with them on various occasions, and distributes gifts to them continuously.

Humanitarian initiatives combine moral support and healthcare, contributing to strengthening their ability to face illness and giving them a space of joy amid their difficult circumstances. The continuation of such activities forms an essential pillar in their treatment journey and reflects the spirit of solidarity and social responsibility toward those most in need of care and attention.
