Shengal (Sinjar)- The people of Shengal have been waging a struggle against the plans and attacks on Shengal for seven years and the Yazidi women have been on the frontlines of this struggle. The women, survivors of the genocide committed by ISIS in 2014, have been making great efforts to form their security forces and organizations and to rebuild their lives. Despite the ongoing attacks against their religion and community, the women of Shengal always say they fight for a free Shengal to the end.

A special warfare against Shengal

Yazidi people living in the Borek village, a village of Sinun town located in Shengal, condemn the ongoing attacks against the Yazidis. Borek Assembly Co-chair Meyan Şengali spoke to NuJINHA about the ongoing plans and attacks on Shengal. “The Kazemi government and the PDK (Kurdistan Democratic Party also abbreviated as KDP) have been waging a special warfare against Shengal. They don’t target only the leaders of our community but also our security forces because they want to leave the people of Shengal unprotected,” she told us.

“The parties of the agreement pave the way for a new genocide”

Commenting on the Kazemi government's attacks, Meyan Şengali said that the Kazemi government only paves the way for a new genocide against the Yazidis with the cooperation of Turkey and the KDP. “The Iraqi government turns a blind eye to terrorists in the Kurdistan Region and Iraqi territories. It openly allows the terrorists to enter our country. If the Kazemi government is against the terror, it should prosecute terrorists; it should support the Yazidis’ security forces protecting the Yazidis from a possible genocide. Instead of protecting us, the Kazemi government is paving the way for a new genocide against the Yazidis now. Everyone knows very well that the Yazidis’ children have been protecting the Yazidi community. We, as the Yazidi community, will never give up our desires and goals. The Melek Taus (one of the central figures of the Yazidi religion) will always protect our children and our people.”

“We don't trust anyone except our children”

Stating that the attacks of Turkey, the Kazemi government and the KDP will fail, Meyan Şengali said, “The Turkish state attacked us after the genocide but it failed. Then, it attacked our community and children again with the support of the Kazemi government and the KDP but it failed again. Their aim was to destroy the Yazidi community and our defense units YBŞ (Sinjar Resistance Units) and YJŞ (Êzîdxan Women's Units), to depopulate Shengal but they failed to create a chaos. They should know that they will always fail because we don’t trust anyone except our children. Only our children can protect us.”

“We will continue to fight for autonomy”

Speaking about the demands of the Yazidis, Meyan Şengali said, “After the genocide, we rebuilt Shengal with our children. Our community knows that if there is an attack on Shengal again, the Iraqi forces will withdraw from Shengal within 10 minutes, leaving us unprotected. We call on the Iraqi government to withdraw its soldiers from our villages and protect its borders against ISIS members. We demand an autonomy Shengal and we will continue to fight for it. We will strengthen our forces to protect the Yazidi community and prevent their plans (the plans of Turkey, the Iraqi government and the KDP) to destroy our forces.”
