Ankara - Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Batman MP Ayşe Acar Başaran has summited a proposal to the Turkish parliament to investigate physical, sexual, economic and psychological violence against women due to their ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation. 

“Women’s achievements have been targeted”

Stating that the number of femicides in Turkey has increased significantly compared to previous years and that 474 women were killed in 2019, Ayşe Acar Başaran said, “Between 2010 and 2019, the number of femicides decreased only in 2011, when Turkey signed the Istanbul Convention. The policy of immunity and the reduction in sentences for perpetrators have hindered the fight against male violence. Women’s achievements such as the Istanbul Convention have been targeted and this plays an important role in increasing male violence.”

“54 trans women have been killed”

“54 trans women have been killed in Turkey since 2018,” Ayşe Acar Başaran emphasized in the motion. Her proposal called on the parliament to investigate all forms of violence against women.
