Baghdad– Iraqi women became more visible in politics after they won 25 percent of the seats in the House of Representatives in 2003. They have worked hard to gain the trust of people. The Iraqi parliamentary elections will be held on October 10 and women have been working harder to gain a great victory in the elections.

News movements will also run for the elections

After more than a year of violent protests, Iraqi activists have launched political parties to run for the parliamentary elections in the country. The Imtidad (Extension) Movement is one of these political parties that emerged after the popular protests in Iraq demanding change and improving the economic and living situation. Nisan Al-Zayer (45) is one of the movement’s candidates. She spoke to NuJinha about their electoral campaign.

“Women will exceed the electoral threshold”

Noting that women in Iraq will vote for their candidates, Nisan Al-Zayer said, “Even if female candidates have less chance, we are visible and we will definitely gain the victory. Recently, women show that they work better and more carefully than men. For this reason, I believe that women will exceed the electoral threshold and they will get what they deserve.”

“Women should get more than 50% of the seats”

 Nisan Al-Zayer talked about the representation of women in the parliament, “Women in the Iraqi parliament have a better relationship with people. Female parliamentarians are able to express themselves better. Women should get more than 50% of the seats because women work better than men and they have a higher sense of responsibility.”
