Emine Bekir: The Baath regime should clarify its stance
“The Syrian government should clarify its stance and views. Now, we should practice the resolution of the crisis together,” says Emine Bekir, the deputy chair of the Euphrates Region.

Kobanî – On August 14, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad made a statement and said that a centralized system cannot govern Syria and that they need a decentralized system. In 2018, the Syrian Democratic Council gave a message to the Baath regime and said a democratic and decentralized solution should be developed for the crisis in Syria. The Syrian government reacted positively but the Baath regime also exhibited a negative attitude. When the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria opened a representative office in Geneva on August 19, the Baath regime sent a message to the Swiss government and demanded the Swiss government review its decision. Emine Bekir, the deputy chair of the Euphrates Region, spoke to our news agency about the politics of the Baath regime and she called for a democratic and decentralized Syria.
“A decentralized Syria”
Emine Bekir indicated that the stance of the Baath regime changed after the elections held in Syria and the formation of the Syrian government by Bashar al-Assad. “The Syrian government insists Syria can return to the pre-crisis state for the first time since 2011. In addition, the government issued an official statement mentioning a decentralized Syria. As the Autonomous Administration, we find the statement of the Syrian regime positive. Since the beginning of the revolution, our stance and demands are obvious. We demand a decentralized Syria, an equal and common system that includes all religions, sects, languages, and cultures.”
“The Autonomous Administration has developed a system”
Emphasizing that the peoples of Syria faced many difficulties during the crisis, Emine Bekir said, “This situation continues. People have defended themselves despite the attacks of the Turkish state, ISIS, and Cebhet Al-Nusra in NE Syria. The people of Syria have faced displacement, massacres, and pillage. Women have faced brutal practices. Children have been deprived of their rights. The last 10-year period was a crisis period and a solution for this crisis hasn’t been found. NE Syria is the safest region in the country. The Autonomous Administration has developed a system for peoples.”
“We want to make the voices of people heard”
Pointing out the statements of the Baath regime, Emine Bekir said, “After the Autonomous Administration opened a representative office in Geneva, the attitude of the Syrian regime changed. The Syrian regime announced that the Autonomous Administration is not legitimate and it demanded the administration not open a representative office. We didn’t open our representative office in Geneva to divide Syria. The aim of the opening a representative office in Geneva is to make the voices of peoples in NE Syria heard all around the world.”
Call on the Baath regime to clarify its stance
Emine Bekir called on the Baath regime and said, “This attitude clarifies the stance and view of the Syrian government. It also reveals its contradictory policies. We say again; The Syrian crisis must be solved by the children of this territory. The Baath regime should clarify its stance for the resolution of the crisis. Syrian people shouldn’t be killed anymore. We should take practical steps together.”
