Corcêt Bersom: We have built democracy against capitalism

Corcêt Bersom, head of the Syriac Women's Union (SWU), said that women have built democracy against capitalism, stressing that the philosophy of “Jin, jiyan, azadi” is the basis of building a democratic and free life.

RONÎDA HACÎ

Hasakah- The slogan, “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (English: Women, Life, Freedom)” chanted by women in Iran continues to echo all around the world. NuJINHA spoke to Corcêt Bersom, head of the Syriac Women's Union (SWU) in North and East Syria, about the women’s uprising in Iran after the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini.

Corcêt Bersom said that a democratic system has been built in Rojava Kurdistan against the capitalist system.

“There are now two ideologies in the world; capitalist modernity and democratic modernity. These two ideologies fight each other now. We have seen how capitalist modernity spreads all around the world for years. The capitalist system attacks all people, particularly the Middle Eastern people. But now, a system has been built against the capitalist system; the system of the democratic modernity led by women. For this reason, the capitalist system attacks women to enslave them. But we see that the system of the democratic modernity stands against it. Contrary to the system of capitalist modernity, the system of the democratic modernity focuses on the real nature of women and societies by moving away from the aristocracy and strata.”

‘Women have broken the capitalist system’

Underlining that the capitalist system has been broken under the leadership of women, Corcêt Bersom said, “People no longer want a system ignoring them. All uprisings in the world are led by women now. Women first rose up in North and East Syria and now they rise up in Iran. The Iranian people can no longer tolerate the system. This is a historic step. The Iranian people demand freedom for everyone now. For this reason, everyone demanding freedom must support the uprising of the Iranian people. The capitalist modernity is afraid of this uprising. But women and people demanding freedom will gain victory.”

‘We should uphold the achievements of the revolution’

Pointing to the revolution in Rojava, Corcêt Bersom calls on women to uphold the achievements of the revolution.

“The Rojava Revolution is a great opportunity for all women. Now, women play important roles in all spheres of life in Rojava. The women of North and East Syria have become a role model for all women across the world with their resistance. Syriac, Kurdish, Arab and Armenian women have united and organized under the paradigm of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. With their knowledge, history, identity and culture, women should strengthen their resistance against the capitalist system. All the hegemonic states unite to defeat the will of the people to control the region. For this reason, it is time to unite. We should uphold the achievements of the revolution in Rojava.”
