Tunisia – At the end of September, Tunisian President Kais Saied Najla appointed Najla Boudin as the new prime minister to form a government. Thus, Najla Boudin becomes the country's first female prime minister. Feminists in Tunisia welcome the appointment of Najla Boudin as prime minister. “The appointment of a woman to such an important and sensitive position is a very important step,” said Najla Allani, the head of the Centre for Research, Studies, Documentation, and Information on Women.

Stating that they, as the centre, are always aware of the importance of women's participation in important decision-making positions, Najla Allani said, “Women have proved their strength and courage once again. Female ministers should be supported to succeed.”

“We definitely trust in the new cabinet”

Activist Jihan Suleymani describes the appointment of Najla Boudin as “The victory of feminists”.  “We definitely trust in the new cabinet consisting of 10 women to overcome the crisis in the country. We are hopeful,” said Jihan Suleymani, who hopes the women in the new cabinet to unite in order to overcome the strict laws against women in the country.

Call for solidarity

“I know very well what it means for a woman to govern a country having a male-dominant society. I call on feminists to launch a solidarity campaign for women ministers,” Jihan Suleymani said.

Highlighting that women’s representation in the current government is important, Aziza Hatira also welcomes the appointment of Najla Boudin as prime minister.
