Gaza- Harassment, rape, and violence against women and girls have increased significantly in recent years. The policy of immunity is the biggest reason for the increase in harassment, rape, and violence all around the world. A 34-year-old man named Samer Ghanam, a police officer, raped his 4-year-old niece on November 12 in Rafah, in southern Gaza. The incident was revealed when the mother took her daughter to a hospital. When the incident was heard in the country, people showed their reactions on social media platforms. Human rights activists call for the implementation of Palestinian laws and the harshest punishment for those who commit serious crimes.

The medical report confirms the sexual abuse

The medical report prepared by doctors also confirms the sexual abuse against the child. At the hospital, the child told the police that her uncle had raped her. The police took action immediately to arrest the perpetrator.

“The perpetrators are released”

Fatima Ashur, a human rights lawyer, criticized the laws in the country.  “Palestinian Penal Code encourages such crimes to be committed. The children from the same family were previously sexually abused; however, the perpetrators were released. After having a meeting with the governor, the perpetrators were released. The perpetrator is now the uncle. He is also a police officer. The articles of the Palestinian Penal Code that pave the way for abuse of women and girls should be amended.”

“Women should take part in decision-making positions”

Stating that Gaza should work to improve its education system that limits the role of women and their political roles, Fatima Ashur said that women should take part in decision-making positions in order to end such incidents and the patriarchal mentality. The press outlets should change their language in reporting the news about women.”
