Amed – A police officer named Mehmet S. reportedly sexually abused a Syrian child in Diyarbakır. According to the received reports, the child went to a police station in the city to file a complaint last year in August and Mehmet S. took her mobile number. A day later, the police officer called her and went to her home saying, “I will buy new clothes for you”. Then, he took her to his home and kept her locked in a room for a day. After the child’s family filed a criminal complaint against the police officer, an investigation was launched against him. However, the police officer is still on duty despite the investigation.
“Syrians are ugly but you are beautiful”
According to the reports, the Syrian child left her home after discussing with her family on August 10, 2021. The child ran after seeing one of her relatives and the citizens called police to help the child. Two police officers, including suspected police officer Mehmet S., went to the scene and took the child to the police station. According to the indictment prepared against Mehmet S., Mehmet S. told the child, “Are you Syrian? You cannot be Syrian. Syrians are ugly but you are beautiful.”
He sent text messages to her
After being taken to the police station, the child filed a complaint against her family. The police officer Mehmet S. asked for her mobile number and sent her a text message saying, “Tomorrow, I will come to your home and we will go to buy new clothes for you”. The day later, the police officer went to her home and took the child to his home. He kept the child locked in a room for a day. After the child told the police officer, “Leave me or I will kill myself”, he took the child back to her home. The child’s family filed a criminal complaint against the police officer and an investigation was launched against him.
An indictment was prepared against the police officer on charges of “Child sexual abuse” and “deprivation of liberty”.
After filing a criminal complaint against Mehmet S., the police officer reportedly threatened the family not to “file a criminal complaint” against him. The police officer Mehmet S. has denied all the accusations against him despite the records of surveillance cameras. The first hearing of the child abuse trial will be held on November 25, 2022 by the Diyarbakır 1st Criminal Court of First Instance. The police officer is still on duty despite being on trial for child sexual abuse.
