Police attack women with tear gas in front of Ankara Courthouse

Ankara Women’s Platform members wanted to issue a statement in front of the Ankara courthouse about 33 women standing trial for saying, “Istanbul Convention should be implemented”. Police attacked women with tear gas.

News Center - Ankara Women’s Platform protested discussion on withdrawing from the Istanbul Convention in Turkey on August 12, 2020. A lawsuit was opened against 33 women for saying “Istanbul Convention should be implemented”. The first hearing of the trial will be held today by Ankara 23rd Criminal Court of First Instance. The women have faced up to three years in prison.

Ankara Women’s Platform members came in front of the Ankara Courthouse and wanted to issue a statement before the hearing. Police attacked the women and used tear gas against them. In response, the women shouted, “Istanbul Convention cannot be judged”.
