Kurdish politician Çağlar Demirel sentenced to five months in prison
Çağlar Demirel, the former Diyarbakır MP of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), has been sentenced to five months in prison.
News Center- Çağlar Demirel, the former Diyarbakır MP of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), has been sentenced to five months in prison for allegedly “Insulting the Republic of Turkey and Turkish government”.
The 5th hearing of the trial was held by the Diyarbakır 14th Criminal Court of First Instance today. Journalists were not allowed to enter the hearing room. The prosecutor demanded a prison sentence against Çağlar Demirel on charges of “Insulting the Republic of Turkey and Turkish government”.
“She has the right to freedom of expression”
At the hearing, the lawyers of Çağlar Demirel said that their client has the right to freedom of expression and her statements must be evacuated as part of the right to freedom of expression and demanded the acquittal of their client.
The court rejected the demands of the lawyers and sentenced Çağlar Demirel to five months in prison.
