News Center- Kurdish activist Zeyneb Celaliyan, the first female political prisoner to receive a life sentence in Iran, has been subjected to torture and exile for years. Her lawyer Shirin Ebad told NuJINHA that Zeyneb Celaliyan has been deprived of her rights and unlawfully sentenced to life imprisonment.
“She has been deprived of her rights”
Emphasizing that the life sentence given to Zeynep Celaliyan by the Iranian authorities is unjustified, Shirin Ebadi said that her client’s rights are violated by being transferred to other prisons without informing her and her family. Pointing out the worsening health condition of Zeynep Celaliyan, Shirin Ebadi said, “She has suffered from many diseases. For this reason, she should be released from prison. She has been also denied medical treatment for six years.”
Iran gives a message to activists
Pointing out that Iran wants to create fear among activists by torturing Zeynep Celaliyan, Shirin Ebadi said, “They give a message to activists. They say if you demand your rights, you will face the same practices. Human rights defenders published a book about the rights of prisoners; however, the prisoners cannot read this book and they cannot know their rights. Zeynep Celaliyan faces rights violations for demanding her rights.”
