News Center- A young woman activist, Maria Sami was murdered by her brother and uncle on Erbil’s 100 meters road near Erbil International Airport on March 6, 2022. On March 9, her brother was arrested. The first hearing of her murder trial was held in Erbil yesterday.

“We think there is an intervention in the file”

Herêm Refhet, lawyer of Maria Sami, issued a press statement after the hearing. “We demanded a more comprehensive investigation to be conducted. However, the court postponed the hearing to next Tuesday without considering the necessary investigations. We think there is an intervention in the court file. A comprehensive investigation has not been conducted until now. No women’s organizations follow the trial.”

“Her uncle had repeatedly used violence against her”

Maria Sami’s mother Gerdun Muhammed made a speech after the hearing and said, “Some documents must be investigated by the court. My son and daughter had a good relationship. My son never used a gun before. However, someone gave my son a gun to kill Maria. Our relatives threaten me. They say I was not a good mother for Maria. Her uncle had repeatedly used violence against her.”
