Idlib- Syrian civil war and economic crisis affect particularly women and children. Families are falling apart and violence is increasing. While those who started the war take advantage of the “war profits”, families have to watch what is going on with great sadness amid the war economy.

The women of Idlib cannot prepare for winter due to the economic crisis in the country. The women complain about the increasing prices of products.

“How can we maintain our lives?”

Saada El Hebûş is a 30-year-old housewife. “Everything becomes more expensive. The prices are increasing every passing day. We cannot afford to buy anything. How can we maintain our lives?” she asked. Saada El Hebûş complains about the increasing prices of products, “We cannot even buy a kilogram of tomatoes.”

“We return from vegetable markets empty-handed”

The women of Idlib have prepared for winter for years. They begin to dry vegetables in summer to use them in winter. But this year, they cannot buy anything due to the increasing prices of vegetables. 50-year-old Sobhia El-Enwar also complains about the increasing prices of vegetables. “We return from the vegetable markets empty-handed. We cannot afford to buy a kilogram of vegetables. Life is so expensive,” she said.

“There is no price control mechanism”

The women of Idlib told us that they will face difficulties in winter due to the increasing prices. Economist Lian Abdel Hamid indicated that one of the main causes of the economic crisis is ongoing conflicts in Syria. “Syrian regime does not take any step about this issue. Everyone can freely increase prices because there is no price control mechanism.”

In Syria, more than nine million require emergency food assistance to meet their basic food needs.
