Kobanî – The revolution led by women in Rojava has scared all sovereign powers. After ISIS was defeated in Kobanî, the Turkish state began its attacks on it in order to defeat the rising hopes of freedom of the people in Kobanî. But its main aim is to target women’s achievements in Rojava. We spoke to Hevin Miho, a member of the Kobanî Social Area Organization, and 70-year-old Nayle El-Oso about women’s achievements and the attacks on them.

Women are on target

“In recent years, the Turkish state has carried out special methods of warfare in NE Syria. It aims to break the struggle of women by performing inhuman practices. It has supported the drug trafficking and its armed groups have sexually harassed and killed women. It wants revenge by performing these practices. The Turkish state has attacked children, youth and women by all available means. Since 2014, it has carried out psychological warfare. They have targeted women who take part in the Autonomous Administration or who are pioneers,” Hevin Miho told NuJINHA.

“They attack to destroy the revolution”

“They want to destroy society,” Hevin Miho said, adding, “Why is Kobanî on target? Because everyone knows that Kobanî was the spark of the 19 July Revolution and Kobanî has been globally recognized. Women of Kobanî have been subjected to violence, femicide and driven to suicide because they organize themselves in every part of life. They attack Kobanî to destroy the revolution.”

Emphasizing that women are on target because of their struggle against the patriarchal mentality, Hevin Miho said, “Women have been becoming stronger by organizing themselves in every part of life. Kobanî was known as a feudal city before being liberated. But after the revolution, it has completely changed. The Turkish state wants to commodify women with its attacks and wants to empty the society.”

Nayle El-Oso: We walked to the border

70-year-old Nayle El-Oso is from Xûrxûrê village of Kobanî. During the attacks on Kobanî, she had to walk for hours to go to Northern Kurdistan. After two months, she decided to return to Kobanî. After returning to Kobanî, she witnessed the liberation of Kobanî. “My son was a member of the YPG. When I heard gunshots, I went to the house of my neighbor to call my son. However, I couldn’t get in contact with my son. Then, I called my brother and he told me there was nothing to worry about. I saw many people going to the center of Kobanî while I was preparing dinner. Then the clashes started. We thought the members of YPJ and YPG were fighting. But then my daughter came from her village and told me that the members of ISIS were entering the village and that we had to leave the village. We didn’t have any vehicles so we walked from our village to Selim village. Then, we walked to Buban village. We left our animals there and walked to the border.”

Stating that there were many people at the border, Nayle El-Oso said, “We spent the night at the border, like everyone. In the morning, we passed the border and entered Northern Kurdistan. We stayed in the village of Kersan. We could see Kobanî from the village. I spent days on the roof to see what happened in Kobanî. After two months, we returned to Kobanî. At that time, the members of ISIS were in Kobanî.”

“We will protect Kobanî to the end”

“As family, we thought if we die, we should die together in Kobanî,” Nayle El-Oso said, “We lived in a house without doors and windows. We had to stay in the house for days because the attacks of ISIS continued. Despite everything, we believed that Kobanî would be liberated. We cooked for fighters. After the liberation of our village, we returned to our village along with several families. Then, other families also returned. The Turkish state tries to attack our city now. But we will not leave our lands as we didn’t before. If we die, we will die here. We will protect Kobanî to the end.”
