News Center- HDP Diyarbakır MP Remziye Tosun stated that the number of femicides and violence against women has increased compared to recent years in Turkey and Kurdistan and that femicide is a political issue.
Remziye Tosun told us that the steps taken by the government and its policies have paved the way for violence against women.
“They withdrew from the Istanbul Convention overnight when the number of femicides was high. After the announcement of the decision, six women were killed by men in 24 hours. The perpetrators are encouraged by both the speeches and the practices of the government. And they are more encouraged due to policies of impunity in the judiciary. They think, ‘I can do everything, nothing will happen to me.’ Or they commit a crime after calculating what kind of punishment they will receive. “
“They demand women to be slaves”
Remziye Tosun called on the government to resign for not be able to prevent femicides;
“The government wants to create women, who sit at the home, cook and do what men want. They try to create this but women have never bowed down to this understanding and have waged a struggle against it for years. They have resisted to live under pressure and prohibitions. The government demand women to be slaves in the country.”
Remziye Tosun emphasized that women cannot take a breath in houses, streets, and workplaces, and that women have been driven to death because their living spaces have been limited.
“Social crisis is behind suspicious deaths of women”
Remziye Tosun drew attention to the increasing number of suicides and suspicious deaths of women in recent years and said that social crisis is behind the suspicious deaths of women; “We are aware of the increasing number of women suicides in the last years. No woman chooses to kill her if everything is fine for her. All women who committed suicide actually were women driven into suicide. The reasons for suicides should be investigated. Those who caused women to kill themselves should stand trial. Six women killed themselves in Diyarbakır and Urfa in four days. This increasing suicide rate in Kurdistan is also political.”
“Closed organizations were spaces for people to take a breath”
HDP MP Remziye Tosun emphasized that besides the pressures, the trustees also had a share in this crisis. Stating that women and young people had organizations to take a breath before the appointment of trustees to municipalities (state-appointed mayors), Remziye Tosun said;
“Before the appointment of the trustees, there were women’s organizations and cultural centers. During those times, women and young people had spaces to participate in activities. Young people carried out cultural, artistic and sportive activities. But after the appointment of the trustees, women’s organizations and cultural centers were closed down or inactivated. All spaces for people to take a breath were destroyed. The appointed trustees have carried out no works for women and young people. They have left people without air. Young people turn into bad habits or drug use. This leads the people of this region into depression and a dilemma. The young people, who struggle against these habits, have been criminalized. The state just wants women and young people to do whatever they want except for doing politics.”
