Halabja- Factors such as the economic crisis, occupation policies, unemployment etc. in the Kurdistan Region cause young people to migrate to other countries. Young people living in Halabja told us that they do not feel safe due to the occupation policies carried out in the Kurdistan Region.

“Young people cannot secure their future”

NuJINHA spoke to Rengîn Selam, a journalist in the Kurdistan Region, about why young people do not feel safe in the region. “Young people have become estranged in their region due to the ongoing occupation. The children of the sovereign powers have become the owners of the land. The citizens have many complaints. Most of them cannot find a job; they suffer from unemployment. Young people cannot secure their future. There are many more reasons for why the young people leave the region.”

“They lose their lives on migration routes”

Pointing out that the young people used to give importance to their national values, Rengîn Selam said, “But now, they do not give importance to these values because they do not trust the authorities in the Kurdistan Region anymore. Most young people try to find a better future in other countries and some of them lose their lives on migration routes. The Kurdistan regional government ignores the situation of young people. The people do not feel safe in the region anymore.”

“Unemployment forces young people to migrate”

Activist Şadan Hebîb thinks young people want to migrate to other countries because they cannot find any job in the region. “Unemployment forces young people to migrate. Young people flee to other countries because they cannot sustain their lives. Efforts must be made to ensure that young people stay in their own country. Their rights must be ensured.”
