Algeria- The World Health Organization has designated October every year as “Breast Cancer Awareness and Awareness Month” since 2004. The pink ribbon is the most prominent symbol of breast cancer awareness to promote the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

According to the report released by WHO in February 2021, breast cancer has now overtaken lung cancer as the world’s mostly commonly-diagnosed cancer. In an interview with NuJINHA, Algerian surgical oncologist Fella Bareche said that they had organized a symposium to raise awareness of breast cancer in Algeria.

“A breast cancer survivor participated in the symposium and shared her experiences with other women. Although she did not have breast surgery, she overcame breast cancer thanks to early detection,” said Fella Bareche, stressing that women of all ages can get breast cancer.

“Breast cancer may be hereditary. Someone may be more likely to have a significant family history if two or more close relatives were diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age. Alcohol and smoking may also be associated with a slightly increased risk of breast cancer. One of the reasons for the high number of breast cancer cases in Algeria is obesity. Women have unhealthy diets and often consume fast food and use birth control pills for many years.”

Calling on all women to have regular examinations for early detection of breast cancer, Fella Bareche said, “Early detection of breast cancer is important to prevent deaths from breast cancer.”
