Shengal (Sinjar)- On November 10, Warisha Moradi, a women’s rights defender and a member of the East Kurdistan Free Women Society (KJAR) was sentenced to death by Branch 15 of the Tehran Islamic Revolutionary Court on charges of “armed rebellion” against the Iranian regime. After the announcement of the verdict, many women’s organizations, human rights defenders and international human rights organizations have published statements, condemning the decision of the Iranian regime.

“The death penalty is inhumane punishment,” said Yazidi women, calling on Iran to dismiss the death sentence against Warisha Moradi.

‘Women should support each other’

Deval Revo, member of the Peoples’ Assembly in the town of Sinun, strongly condemned the death sentences handed down to women fighting for freedom by Iran. “Iran targets all women fighting for freedom and violates women’s rights. All around the world, women fight for their rights and freedom. No one can prevent women's struggle for freedom. As Yazidi women, we raise our voice for women’s freedom. Our voice is the voice of all women fighting for freedom all over the world. I call on all women to take action against the death sentence handed down to Warisha Moradi and to demand her release.”

Vejîn Argeş, member of the Êzidxan Youth Union, called on all women to “protest the death sentences handed down to women in Iran. Women should support each other because they can be free by being in solidarity with each other. Women fighting for freedom in Iran and all around the world are oppressed by their families and the states. All women must raise their voices against the death penalty in Iran.”

‘Yazidi women play a leading role in society and revolution’

“As women journalists, we condemn the Iranian regime for sentencing women to death,” said Bêrîvan Çiya, a journalist in Shengal. “Women’s struggle for freedom is prevented not only in Iran but also all around the world. The patriarchal states cannot prevent women from defending their rights by sentencing them to death. In the past, Yazidi women could not do anything for their own rights, but now they play a leading role in society and revolution. Women are stronger now.”

Warisha Moradi, a women’s rights defender and a member of the East Kurdistan Free Women Society (KJAR), was arrested by Iranian security forces in Sanandaj on August 1, 2023. After being subjected to physical and physiological torture for five months, she was transferred to Evin prison.
