UNESCO dedicates 2023 International Day of Education to Afghan girls and women
UNESCO has dedicated the 2023 International Day of Education to Afghan girls and women, who have been deprived of their right to education. Today, UNESCO will renew its call to immediately restore their fundamental right to education.
News Center-The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced on its official Twitter account that UNESCO has dedicated the 2023 International Day of Education to Afghan girls and women, who have been deprived of their right to education.
On December 3, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming January 24 as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for bringing global peace and sustainable development. On January 24, 2019, the first International Day of Education was celebrated. Since then, the International Day of Education is annually observed all around the world. The theme of the 2023 International Day of Education is ‘Invest in people; prioritize education’.
According to the statement published on the UNESCO’s website, UNESCO will host an event at the United Nations in New York today and UNESCO will renew its call on the Taliban to immediately restore girls and women’s fundamental right to education. “Currently, 2.5 million (80%) of school-aged Afghan girls and young women are out of school, 1.2 million of whom were denied access to secondary schools and universities following the decision of the de facto authorities,” the statement said.
