UN Report: Famine Strikes EL-Fasher and Kadugli Amid Escalating conflict
A report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has confirmed the outbreak of famine in El-Fasher in North Darfur and Kadugli in South Kordofan, reflecting a worsening humanitarian crisis in western and southern Sudan.
News Center – The humanitarian situation in El-Fasher has deteriorated catastrophically following the takeover by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with grave human rights violations reported — including mass killings, sexual violence, and forced displacement. Thousands of residents have fled the city amid a total communications blackout and the collapse of essential services.
A report released on Monday, November 3, by the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) confirmed that El-Fasher and Kadugli have been suffering from famine since September, warning that the lack of access to conflict-affected areas is worsening the risk of famine spreading — particularly in 20 towns expected to receive large waves of displaced people across North, South, and East Darfur, as well as West and South Kordofan.
The report warned that over 21 million people faced high levels of acute food insecurity in September, with the situation expected to persist at least until May next year, reflecting the deepening humanitarian crisis and its ongoing repercussions.
According to the Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) coordinator, nearly all children arriving in the nearby town of Tawila after fleeing El-Fasher were suffering from malnutrition, while adults arrived emaciated and weak.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) had earlier reported that over 36,000 people fled towns and villages in North Kordofan State as fighting in Darfur intensified.
Since the RSF seized control of El-Fasher, testimonies have emerged describing summary executions, sexual assaults, attacks on aid workers, looting, and kidnappings. With communications still down, prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC) have confirmed they are collecting evidence of alleged mass killings and sexual violence following the RSF’s takeover of the city.
The ongoing two-and-a-half-year conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces has fueled widespread hunger, severe malnutrition, and mass displacement, while igniting waves of ethnic violence—particularly across the Darfur region
