Shengal (Sinjar)- Turko Reşo and her husband Elî Iliyas live in the town of Sinun, Shengal. They sew traditional clothes of Yazidis and sell them at low prices to preserve Yazidi culture.

Turko Reşo told NuJINHA that she was happy to see Yazidi girls and boys wearing traditional clothes. “We sew traditional clothes of Yazidis to preserve Yazidi culture. I only wear our traditional clothes. I know and sew all styles of Yazidi clothes to promote our culture in our community, especially among young people.”

‘Our culture is our identity’

Turko Reşo has sewed traditional clothes of Yazidis for a year while taking care of her three children and doing household chores. “Our children should preserve their culture. Our culture is our identity and we should preserve our culture, language and traditional clothes. I want to expand my business to sell clothes even cheaper. I call on all Yazidis, especially young people, to wear their traditional clothes in order to preserve our culture.”

Elî Iliyas helps his wife and sews traditional clothes of Yazidis. He also calls on all Yazidis to “preserve their culture by wearing their traditional clothes. Tawûsî Melek (Peacock Angel) is the most important symbol of Yazidis. Every Yazidi must have a ‘Tok’ with the symbol of Tawûsî Melek on it from birth to death. The white flowers on Tok symbolize the pureness, purity and unity of the body and the truth in the heart.”
