Hasakah- The General Council of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) approved the amended 134 articles of the Social Contract on December 12, 2023. Implementing a system based on democracy, the AANES aims to unite all ethnic groups and communities under the umbrella of the AANES based on a democratic system so that they can have an equal and democratic life.

 One of these communities is the community of the Yazidis, who were subjected to a genocide by ISIS between 2014 and 2017. With the approval of the Social Contract, the Yazidis living in North and East Syria have become a part of the system of the AANES. In an interview with NuJINHA, Leyla İbrahim, member of Yazidi House in the Jazira Canton, talked about how the Social Contract is important for the Yazidis.

‘This system is a chance for us’

The AANES based on democratic system prevents possible genocide against the Yazidi community, Leyla İbrahim said, adding, “Thus, the Yazidi House representing the Yazidis in the region has an important mission within the system of the AANES. This system is a chance for us.”

‘We rebuilt our lives thanks to the AANES’

Recalling that many Yazidis were killed, abducted, displaced and injured during the genocide committed by ISIS, Leyla İbrahim said, “But we rebuilt our lives thanks to the AANES; we preserve our culture, identity and history. The revolution in Rojava Kurdistan is a great opportunity and chance for us to build a democratic and free future.”

‘We want to fulfill the provisions of the Social Contract’

 “As Yazidi women, we have organized ourselves to rescue all women abducted during the Yazidi genocide,” said Leyla İbrahim while talking about the third phase of Operation Humanity and Security against ISIS in al-Hol camp.

“The operation launched in al-Hol camp was very important for us. Many Yazidi women are still held captive by ISIS. Such operations should be launched to rescue more Yazidi women. The Yazidi House has a committee aiming to rescue all Yazidi women. As Yazidi women living in North and East Syria, we want to rescue all Yazidi women and fulfill the provisions of the Social Contract. We are determined to struggle.”

‘As the Yazidi community, we have a system for the first time’

Leyla İbrahim thinks that the Social Contract is the guarantee of protecting revolutionary values.

“The gains and values of the revolution were achieved thanks to the unity and solidarity of people from all nationalities, ethnic groups and religions in the region. The approved Social Contract protects this unity and solidarity. As the Yazidi community, we have a system for the first time. The contract has articles protecting the religion, values and achievements of the Yazidi community.”
