‘The PKK is an ideological party having a strong and deep-rooted legacy’
“The PKK is an ideological party having a strong and deep-rooted legacy,” said Hemdiya Kûtê, who has played an active role in the Kurdish struggle for freedom for years.

Til Temir (Tell Tamer)- The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (Kurdish: Partiya Karkerên Kurdistanê, PKK) held its 12th Congress in the Medya Defense Zones between May 5 and May 7, 2025 over the “Call for Peace and Democratic Society” by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. On May 12, the PKK announced that it dissolved itself, ending its armed struggle.
In an interview with NuJINHA, Hemdiya Kûtê, who has played an active role in the struggle of the Kurdish people for freedom for years, expressed her support to the historic call of Abdullah Öcalan, indicating that they would fulfill their duties and responsibilities for peace.
‘We would have inspired the world without the philosophy of the PKK and leader Apo’
In the 1990s, Hemdiya Kûtê formed a friendship with the important figures of the PKK.
Hemdiya Kûtê began to speak by commemorating Ali Haydar Kaytan (nom de guerre: Fuat) and Rıza Altun, two revolutionary martyrs who founded the PKK with Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. “The martyrdom of these two comrades has deeply affected us. They waged a great resistance against the oppression and attacks of the Turkish state. I wish they were with us today and could hear leader Apo's call for peace.”
The PKK has a life philosophy, Hemdiya Kûtê emphasized. “We would have inspired the world without the philosophy of the PKK and leader Apo. We support the call of leader Apo and abide by his decision.”
‘Türkiye must make a radical change in its politics’
Hemdiya Kûtê stated that Abdullah Öcalan’s call for peace was not a call for the Kurdish people but also for the Turkish people. “Turkey must understand this call correctly and make a radical change in its politics. Or, Türkiye will slide into chaos.”
Hemdiya Kûtê recalled the peace process that started in Türkiye in the 1990s and said, “Many people were arrested but the armed struggle continued. The PKK is not a weak party, supporting the peace process because it does not see war as a solution. The PKK could not be eliminated despite the support of Europe, NATO and the major countries because the PKK has a deep-rooted philosophy of life.”
‘Kurds fight for a life with dignity’
Hemdiya Kûtê criticized the Turkish state's mentality of one flag, one language and one nation. “There are many ethnic and religious groups living in Türkiye; however, they cannot speak their own language or have their rights. Kurds fight for a life with dignity. Erdoğan should sit at the negotiation table by taking concrete steps. The PKK advocates building a democratic society based on freedom, equality and peace.”
‘Women must be more active than ever’
Hemdiya Kûtê called on women to be more active than ever by participating in the peace process. “As women, we must struggle for the physical freedom of leader Apo. Women must unite to build a democratic society and women all around the world should support this process. The 21st century will be the century of building a democratic society.”
Hemdiya Kûtê was also a friend of Sakine Cansız. Speaking about Sakine Cansız, she said, “Comrade Sakine was a determined and strong woman although she had faced torture in prison. When I told her that I would not have joined this organization (PKK) if I had known that I would be subjected to oppression, she told me, ‘The enemy is not an ordinary enemy. We will resist in all circumstances’.”
“The PKK is a strong and ideological movement,” Hemdiya Kûtê stressed. “Without the PKK, Kurds would not be heard and the Kurdish language would not be preserved today. Thanks to the PKK, the Kurdish question is discussed today. We will support the call of leader Apo to the end. Our most important duty is to ensure the physical freedom of leader Apo, to liberate our occupied cities and to raise the flag of victory.”
