The Norwegian Nobel Committee condemns the Arrest of Activist Narges Mohammadi

The Norwegian Nobel Committee condemned the arrest of human rights activist Narges Mohammadi,the 2023 Nobel peace priza laureate, describing it as “brutal” In Iran, following her participation in a ceremony commemorating the lawyer Khosrow Ali Kordi.

News Center- the arrest of human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has sparked a wide wave of reactions,as human rights organizations called on the Iranian authorities to immediately release her after she was violently detained . her arrest came after she addressed crowds with anti- government chants, during which she was beaten and dragged by her hair.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee for the Peace Prize reported yesterday, Friday, December 12, that Iranian authorities arrested human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, in what it described as a “brutal” manner. The committee demanded her immediate release, noting that her detention followed her participation in a weekly ceremony commemorating the death of lawyer Khosrow Ali Kordi in the city of Mashhad.

In a statement, the committee urged the Iranian authorities to immediately disclose Narges Mohammadi’s whereabouts, ensure her safety and dignity, and release her unconditionally.

 

Narges Mohammadi has perviously faced several legal cases,including the charge of “spreading propaganda against the Islamic Repulic”.At the end of last year,she was released from Evin prison in Tehran after her sentence was temporarily suspended to receive medical treatment.

Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 in recognition of her three-decade-long career defending women’s rights and opposing the death penalty in Iran.

The Narges Mohammadi Foundation also announced that the activist was detained along with fellow activists Sepideh Gholian, Hasti Amiri, Pouran Nazemi, Alieh Motalebzadeh, and several other participants in the ceremony. The body of Iranian lawyer Khosrow Ali Kordi, aged 46, was found last week inside his office, while his family asserts that surveillance camera recordings from the premises were confiscated by security authorities.
