Support for students of Boğaziçi grows
Support for students of Boğaziçi University is growing like an avalanche in many cities of Turkey. High school students also support them and say, “We demand free universities.” Today, the academics of METU will issue a press statement in front of the building of the Department of Physics to support the demand of students and academics of Boğaziçi University.
News Center- The appointment of Melih Bulu to Boğaziçi University as rector has been protested in almost of cities of Turkey. Not only university students but also academics and high school students support the students and academics of the Boğaziçi University.
Many people gathered in Istanbul’s Kadıköy district on February 2 to support students and academics of Boğaziçi University. Police attacked them and took 94 people into custody. 11 people who wanted to join the demonstrations in Beşiktaş, Sarıyer, and Kadıköy were also detained. Totally 105 people were detained. 82 of them were released after being questioned. The procedure for detained 23 people was completed at the prosecutor's office and they were sent to court. The court decides to put 11 of them under house arrest. 10 of them have been released and banned from traveling abroad. Şilan Delibalta and Anıl Akyüz have been sent to prison for allegedly “contravening Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations”.
University students in almost all cities of Turkey such as Samsun, Antep, Adana, Edremit, Kayseri organized protests to support the students of Boğaziçi University. Police attacked the protesters; 17 people were detained in Samsun; 20 students were detained in Bursa. The detained people were later released. Nine people were detained in Çanakkale.
Academics to issue a press statement
The academics of the Middle East Technical University (MENU) will issue a press statement today at 12:00 in front of the building of the Department of Physics. The academics call on people and say, “As the academics of MENU, we will wear our academic gowns and meet in front of the building of the Department of Physics on February 5, 2021, at 12:00 to demand the detained students to be released, to support the rightful demand of the academics and students of Boğaziçi University and to emphasize the importance of the democratic election of university administrators.”
