Retiree Protests in Iran Expand to Six Cities, Demanding Rights and an End to Executions
Iran's labor protests expanded to six major cities, with thousands of retirees marching against deteriorating living conditions, demanding detainees' release and an end to escalating executions.
NEWS CENTER – Iran is witnessing a severe deterioration in living conditions due to inflation and the collapse of the local currency, and the gap between wages and living costs is widening, amid unprecedented jumps in food prices, which deepens citizens' daily suffering and fuels popular anger.
A group of social security retirees in Kermanshah organized a protest march to demand the improvement of their living conditions and health care, where they chanted slogans denouncing high prices, inflation, administrative corruption, and the deterioration of medical services, demanding fairness for them. The chants also included demands for the release of workers, teachers, and other detained protesters.
In Tehran, retirees protested against the issuance of death sentences under the slogan "United Against the Death Penalty," simultaneously with another gathering in Ahvaz in front of the Social Security Directorate in Khuzestan, denouncing the harsh living conditions and the non-payment of financial arrears, amid slogans against poverty, corruption, and death sentences.
As for Rasht, retirees came out in a street march affirming unity and solidarity, and protesters raised slogans opposing the issuance of death sentences and affirming the option of protests to wrest rights.
In Shush city, social security retirees and sugar cane workers gathered in "Haft Tappeh" in a joint march against inflation, unemployment, the widening scope of poverty, the privatization of education and health, and the marginalization of social care, alongside independent labor unions, raising the slogan "Bread, Work, Freedom" and denouncing arrests and executions.
At the same time, retirees of the iron and steel factories in Isfahan gathered in front of the governor's office, demanding free and sustainable health insurance, a fair adjustment of salaries, and immediate payment of arrears to bridge the gap between them and current employees.
These movements came as an extension of repeated protests reflecting the widening ceiling of popular demands, starting from the living and financial aspect to broader rights, political, and social issues. The demonstrations included six major cities: Tehran, Kermanshah, Shush, Rasht, Ahvaz, and Isfahan.
