Amed (Diyarbakır)- On August 23, 2024, a Turkish drone targeted a vehicle carrying journalists in the Saidsadiq district of Sulaymaniyah, killing two women journalists, Gülistan Tara and Hêro Bahadîn. Women in Northern Kurdistan condemn the Turkish drone attack targeting the journalists.

‘Kurdish people will not forget this betrayal’

“Kurdish people will not forget this betrayal,” said Sultan Yaray, Co-chair of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Headquarters in Amed, stressing that those who cooperate with the AKP-MHP alliance will disappear into thin air in history.

“There has been hostility towards the Kurdish people for years. Kurdish women are killed in four parts of Kurdistan. Serious crimes are committed against both Kurdish women and the people of Kurdistan. The attack against the journalists was not the first attack targeting women; many of our friends were previously targeted and killed by the AKP-MHP with the support of the KDP. Today, the system of annihilation and genocide reveals itself in all facets of life. Those who betray the people and collaborate with the AKP-MHP should know this well: They will be held accountable for this. Our people will not forget the betrayers. The Kurdish people will continue to expose this betrayal everywhere.”

‘They were targeted because they reported war crimes’

“The state that maintains its power by shedding blood, has been continuing its policies based on massacres for years,” said Remziye Bilir, member of the Free Women’s Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera Jinên Azad-TJA). “Two women journalists were targeted and killed by the Turkish state. They were targeted because they were women, journalists and they reported war crimes. Enemies of freedom and perpetrators of crimes against humanity were afraid of these women. Journalists should be free everywhere. We are faced with a dirty state that maintains its power by shedding blood. It does everything to silence everyone. Why are they in Iraq? Why do those who condemn what has been happening in Gaza remain silent against the crimes committed in Kurdistan? How long will this hypocrisy last?”

‘The struggle for truth will never end’

Mesopotamia Agency (MA) reporter Şilan Çil also condemned the attack targeting the journalists in Sulaymaniyah. “The attack aimed to prevent the truth from being revealed. Journalists, especially women journalists, are targeted because they reveal the truth. In this way, the right and freedom to receive information is being hindered. Such policies have been going on for about 40 years. We will follow in our colleagues’ footsteps and struggle to reveal the truth.”
