Til Temir- Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took power in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024. Since the formation of an interim government led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), pro-government armed groups have committed massacres against the Alawite minority in Syria’s coastal regions. It is estimated that nearly 2,000 people, including women and children, have been killed in the attacks against the Alawite people in Latakia, Daraa, Homs and Tartus.

‘No religion orders the killing of women’

“No religion orders the killing of women,” said Xulûd Ebdo, coordinating member of the Democratic Islamic Congress of North and East Syria. “Islam says that people should not be murdered. According to the Quran, murder is one of the greatest of major sins. However, women have been killed in Syria’s coastal regions.”

‘Massacres in coastal regions pose a threat to the democratization of Syria’

“Islam respects and values women,” said Ebîr Elî, one of the administrators of the congress. “The government led by jihadist HTS has committed massacres against Syrian women, especially Alawite women. They (government) do not respect and value women but kill and harass them. The interim government does nothing about Islam but uses Islam according to its own interests. We condemn the killing of women and rights violations against them. The massacres in coastal regions pose a threat to the democratization of Syria.”

‘Those who killed Yazidi women now kill Alawite women’

Ahîn Şerîf, another administration of the congress, called on the new government of Syria to follow the policies of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. “The government must respect the freedoms of all identities and stop attacking the ethnic and religious groups. The attacks on women in the coastal regions are the same with the attacks on the women of Serêkanîyê (Ras al-Ayn). The armed groups that have killed women in the coastal regions are the same armed groups that killed women in Serêkanîyê.  Those who killed Yazidi women now kill Alawite women. We know very well that these attacks are under the control and command of the Turkish state.”

‘The murderers are under the protection of the Turkish state’

Ahîn Şerîf thinks that the Turkish state has a hand in the attacks on Alawite women. “The Turkish state had a hand in the attacks on women in Afrin and Serêkanîyê and now it has a hand in the attacks on Alawite women in the coastal regions. Today, HTS is under the protection of the Turkish state. The murderers of women are under the protection of the Turkish state. An investigation must be launched into the massacres committed in the coastal regions and the murderers must not go unpunished. I call on the international community not to remain silent against the massacres.”
