Marzieh Mahmoudi to stand trial again for reporting on death of Nika Shakarami

Journalist Marzieh Mahmoudi will stand trial for the third time for reporting on the sexual assault and murder of 16-year-old Nika Shakarami during the nationwide protests.

News Center- 16-year-old Nika Shakarami was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and killed by Iranian security forces during the nationwide protests that sparked in Iran following the killing of Jinae Mahsa Amini in September 2022 by Iran’s so-called “morality police”. Journalist Marzieh Mahmoudi will stand trial for the third time for reporting on the sexual assault and murder of Nika Shakarami.

Marzieh Mahmoudi will stand trial for the third time on July 3, 2024, her lawyer, Reza Shafakhah, said on social platform X on Tuesday.

The Branch 16 of the Culture and Media Prosecutor’s Office summoned Marzieh Mahmoudi in May 2024 and filed a case against her for reposting the BBC report on the abduction and murder of Nika Shakarami during the nationwide uprising. In May 2024, she was fined 30 million Tomans and sent to internal exile in the remote city of Torbat-e Jam in Razavi Khorasan province for criticizing former MP Hamid Rasaee.
