Makani project discusses women’s representation in Yemeni media

Yemen - The Makani (My Place) Project held a symposium in Aden city to discuss the situation of Yemeni women in the Yemeni media. A number of female media workers participated in the symposium and discussed women’s representation in the media sector, the situation of Yemeni female media workers and the obstacles to their access to leadership and the decision-making process in media institutions.
A number of Yemeni journalists from Sana'a, Taiz and Hadramout participated in the symposium. Ilham Mane, a professor at The University of Munich, also participated in the symposium and she spoke about the importance of supporting Yemeni female media workers and resolving the problems that they face at their workplace.
Sarah Filali, director of the Makani (My place) project, said that the project works with Yemeni and Iraqi female journalists and aims to support women journalists through the courses held in Yemen and Iraq.
Dr. Nebras Al-Mamouri is the president of the Iraqi Women Media Forum, a doctor of political sciences, and a partner in the Makani in Iraq project. She said that the female journalists should support each other to cover and address women's issues.
Nadia Al-Saqqaf is a former Yemeni Minister and politician. She also participated in the symposium and provided professional advice for media women and she ended her speech by giving a number of recommendations to enhance the role of women in the media and to empower them in a way that guarantees their rights.
