During 2017 Newroz celebrations in Amed (Diyarbakır), was killed by Turkish police. The police claimed that the police officers shot Kemal Kurkut because they believed that he was a suicide bomber. But the photo captured by journalist Abdurrahman Gök showed Kemal Kurkut moving through a police checkpoint without a shirt on.
The commemoration was attended by many people including Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-chair Berdan Öztürk, People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Co-chair Tuncer Bakırhan, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Co-chairs Keskin Bayındır and Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar, Kurdish politicians Leyla Zana and Mehmet Öcalan.
‘We will not forget’
Holding the photographs of Kemal Kurkut, the people left carnations at the place, where Kemal Kurkut was shot dead. “Kemal Kurkut was killed during Newroz celebrations in 2017. In 2024 Newroz, we remember him with respect,” DEM Party Co-chair Tuncer Bakırhan said in his speech. “We will not forget Kurkut. Although those who killed him were granted with impunity, we will not forget him. Kemal Kurkut is immortal.”
