News Center- Jinnews, an all-women’s news agency based in Amed (Diyarbakır), has released its January 2025 report on femicide in Türkiye by compiling news from local and national newspapers, news websites and news agencies. 32 women and five children were killed and 25 women and two children died under suspicious circumstances in January, according to the report.
The report also includes the stories of women and children killed in January. Femicide and gender-based violence are caused by deep-rooted problems such as gender inequality, gender stereotypes, deficiencies in the judicial system, the sexist and discriminatory language used by the government and the mainstream media outlets targeting women and children, the report said.
“Women are killed by men because they want to build their own lives,” the news agency said in the report.
In January, 12 women were killed by their male relatives, eight women by their husbands, five by foreign men, four by their partners, one by her estranged husband, one by her ex-husband, one by a man she knew, according to the report. “Gender-based violence is on rise because the judicial system protects perpetrators with impunity.”
