Investigation launched into journalist Öznur Değer

The Mardin Governor’s Office has announced on Monday that an investigation has been launched into Jinnews reporter Öznur Değer on charges of “insulting a public official” for standing up to a police officer’s sexist remarks.

Mardin- The Mardin Governor’s Office has announced on Monday that an investigation has been launched into Jinnews reporter Öznur Değer on charges of “insulting a public official” for standing up to a police officers’ sexist remarks during a protest in Mardin the killing of two journalists in a Turkish drone attack in northern Syria.

On Sunday, members of the Free Women’s Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera Jinên Azad-TJA) and other women tried to hold a march in the Midyat district of Mardin province to protest the killing of two journalists; however, police tried to block them. Despite everything, they held their march. Jinnews reporter Öznur Değer was subjected to a police officer’s sexist remarks while covering the protest and she stood up to the police officer’s sexist remarks.

According to the reports, Öznur Değer has also received social media threats.

“Women Press Freedom condemns the judicial and online harassment targeting the reporter. Authorities must stop weaponizing the law to silence journalists. Drop the investigation into Değer now,” the Coalition for Women in Journalism (CFWIJ) said in a post on Monday.
