Candles lit all over the world for Nagihan Akarsel

Nagihan Akarsel, who was assassinated in Sulaymaniyah, will be buried in Gölyazı village of Konya's Cihanbeyli district. Last night, candles were lit all over the world for Nagihan Akarsel.

News Center- Academic and journalist Nagihan Akarsel, member of Jineology Academy and editor of Jineology magazine, was assassinated in Sulaymaniyah, city of the Kurdistan Region, on October 4. Her body was taken from the Kurdistan Region to Konya province in Turkey. Her body has been taken to Konya City Hospital for autopsy. After the autopsy procedures, Nagihan Akarsel will be buried in Gölyazı village of Konya's Cihanbeyli district.

Last night, a social media campaign was launched to condemn the killing of Nagihan Akarsel. Women all around the world lit candles and observed a moment of silence. They shared videos on social media platforms under the hashtags #NagihanAkarsel and #JinJiyanAzadî.

Istanbul

Women in Istanbul prepared a memory corner by putting Nagihan Akarsel’s photos, candles, carnations and the issues of the Jineology magazine. After lighting the candles, women observed a moment of silence. During the commemoration, the women chanted slogans such as “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom)” and “Şehîd namirin (Martyrs are immortal)”.

Commemoration in Yüksekova

A commemoration was held at the building of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Yüksekova district of Hakkari province with the participation of many women and members of the Peace Mothers’ Initiative. The women put carnations and lit candles on a table. A commemoration was also held at the building of the HDP in the Doğubayazıt district of Ağrı province by the Free Women’s Movement (TJA). While women held a commemoration for Nagihan Akarsel in Muş province, the women of Van read poems to commemorate Nagihan Akarsel.

Women lit candles all over the world

In Germany, women lit candles in front of Nagihan Akarsel’s photos and sang Kurdish songs. Journalists and press employees of Medya News TV and Sterk TV also held a commemoration in the Denderleeuw town of Belgium. They wrote “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” by using candles and lit them.

London

The Democratic Women's Movement in Europe set up a table in London by putting photographs of Nagihan Akarsel on it. The women protested the killing of Nagihan Akarsel and held a banner reading, “We do not forgive”.

Paris

A commemoration was held in Paris, capital of France, for Nagihan Akarsel. The place where three revolutionary women were murdered on January 9, 2013 was chosen to hold the commemoration. The women lit candles in front of the photographs of Sakine Cansız, Fidan Doğan, Leyla Şaylemez and Nagihan Akarsel. The women shared a video on social media platforms by writing, “We know the killers! We do not give up struggling! #JinJiyanAzadî.”

Members of the European Parliament lit candles

Women politicians, including Laura Castel i Fort, member of the Spanish Senate, and HDP Batman MP Feleknas Uca, lit candles and chanted the slogan “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” in the European Parliament building.

Ankara

HDP Istanbul MP Züleyha Gülüm made a speech at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and said, “Nagihan Akarsel, who carried out many researches, was killed as a result of an armed attack in front of her house. We, as women, will pursue Nagihan Akarsel's search for truth. The fascist male-dominant state mentality should know that Nagihan Akarsel's pen will never remain on the ground. We say Jin, Jiyan, Azadi chanted by women in Tehran, Diyarbakır, Istanbul and Berlin.”

After the commemorations, the women shared videos on social media platforms under the hangtags #NagihanAkarsel and #JinJiyanAzadî.
