After Protesting Conditions for Female Prisoners... Ghazal Marzban Assaulted and Denied Treatment
Human rights reports have revealed that Iranian prisoner Ghazal Marzban was beaten inside the women's wing of Evin Prison, resulting in a fracture to her left hand.
News Center — Human rights reports have indicated that Iranian prisoner Ghazal Marzban, a recent convert to Christianity serving her sentence in the women's wing of Evin Prison, was beaten by prison staff after she protested the living conditions inside the wing.
According to available information, the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 14, after she raised objections to what reports described as the deteriorating conditions in the women's wing following the sudden transfer of approximately 60 new female prisoners, which increased overcrowding and exacerbated the difficulties faced by inmates in the wing.
The reports added that Ghazal Marzban's protest was met with violent intervention by prison staff, as she was beaten, resulting in a fracture to her left hand. It was noted that the Evin Prison doctor conducted a medical examination, confirmed the fracture, and recommended her urgent transfer to a medical center outside the prison for necessary examinations and specialized treatment.
Despite the medical recommendation, reports stated that the prison administration has not yet responded to the request to transfer her to the hospital, leaving her detained inside the prison suffering from pain caused by the injury, without receiving the medical care recommended by the doctor.
These developments have raised human rights concerns regarding healthcare conditions inside Iranian prisons, particularly concerning prisoners' ability to receive necessary treatment after injuries or in medical emergencies, amid recurring reports of delays or refusal to transfer some prisoners to specialized medical centers.
Ghazal Marzban is a recent convert to Christianity and a graduate of the Faculty of Law. She had previously been sentenced to approximately ten years in prison after being convicted on charges including "incitement and encouraging others to commit acts of violence and killings."
She is currently serving her sentence in the women's wing of Evin Prison, while reports continue to indicate the deterioration of her health condition due to the lack of appropriate treatment.
