A Roundtable Discusses Enhancing Sudanese Women's Participation in Peace Negotiations

Active young Sudanese women at a roundtable discussed mechanisms to bridge the gap between their community leadership roles and limited representation in negotiation paths and political decision-making.

SUDAN – The Environment and Rural Women's Development Organization (ERD) organized a roundtable within the project to enhance the participation of young women in peace negotiations and political processes in Sudan, with the participation of active young women from Sudanese civil society organizations and initiatives.

The roundtable witnessed rich discussions that reflected the diversity of experiences and visions, and shed light on the gap between the leadership roles that young women undertake at the community level under the conflict and their limited representation in negotiation spaces and decision-making. It addressed the challenges related to political polarization and societal divisions and the importance of building dialogue spaces that transcend regional and ethnic differences to crystallize common visions for Sudan's future.

The program included a direct communication meeting between the participants and the office of the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Sudan, as a practical step to link the voices of young women with diplomatic efforts and peace paths.

The organization confirmed that the effective participation of young women is not achieved merely by attending consultations, but by ensuring that their recommendations reach decision-makers and are transformed into real opportunities for influence. It stressed the importance of expanding the scope of participation to include young women from rural areas and conflict-affected communities, and not limiting representation to the elites with the most access to political and diplomatic spaces. It emphasized that young Sudanese women are fundamental partners in building peace and shaping its future, and that comprehensive and sustainable peace is not achieved without their real and diverse participation.
