News Center- Feminists held a press conference at the election office of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) at Ankara’s Konur Sokak, expressing their support to imprisoned Kurdish politician Gültan Kışanak, DEM Party's co-mayoral candidate for Ankara.
At the press conference, feminist Fatma Nevin Vargün read a statement
Emphasizing that Gültan Kışanak is also the candidate of feminists, the statement said, “Because we have been waging the women’s struggle for freedom with her for many years. When she was a MP, she became the voice of women’s struggle for freedom and struggled for peace, democracy and labor. We witnessed how she did her best to strengthen the struggle for democracy and gender equality when she was the co-mayor of the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality until her position was usurped by trustees.”
‘Gültan Kışanak is also our candidate’
The statement continues as follows:
“We know how women make great efforts to change their lives by increasing women’s participation in all facets of life, opening women's counseling centers and shelters and implementing policies on gender equality against the male-dominant mindset that sees local administrations as positions for their economic profit by implementing policies based on construction of roads, infrastructure and buildings. Gültan Kışanak is an activist of the Kurdish women’s movement. As feminists, we have worked in cooperation with the Kurdish women’s movement for years. We say that Gültan Kışanak is also our candidate.”
